Organic Kid’s Sheets and Bedding

Children should spend anywhere from 10 to 14 hours of their day sleeping. Spending that much time in bed is good for their health, but what about their bedding? Many bedding options on the market are racked with harmful chemicals and pesticides that can negatively impact their health over time. Finding organic kid’s bedding can be challenging, but it doesn’t have to be a headache!

Why is Organic Kid’s Bedding Important?

Organic bedding is important because children are more prone to toxin absorption than adults. Matured adult bodies can detoxify more efficiently because of a fully developed blood-brain barrier and kidneys.

Children are more likely to absorb toxins quickly because they take in 50% more oxygen per pound than adults. Combine this with a much faster metabolism, and kids are at risk of serious health issues if exposed to harmful toxins in bedding.

Considering how much time children spend sleeping, it’s essential they aren’t sleeping on toxins.

Making your child’s sleeping environment as healthy as possible can seem daunting, especially with all the misleading marketing around organic kid’s bedding.

So, I’ve done the research for you so that you can focus on giving your child the healthy sleep space they deserve.

What to Avoid in Kid’s Bedding

There are several things to consider when looking for organic kid’s bedding. First, avoid any bedding that contains the following:

Synthetic Fibers

Many bedding options are made with synthetic fibers like polyester, rayon, nylon, or acrylic.

Synthetic fibers are made with petroleum (aka fossil fuels). These harmful chemicals can absorb into your children’s skin while they sleep.

This can cause skin irritation, respiratory irritation, and it can significantly impact their health in the long run. Synthetic fibers have been linked to reproductive system disruption and immune weakness due to the harmful substances used to make them.

Non-Certified Cotton

You may see kid’s sheets or other kid’s bedding labeled “100% cotton,” which sounds great. But conventional cotton is one of the dirtiest crops on the planet.

Conventional cotton is farmed with an array of pesticides that stay in the fibers long after they’ve left the farm.

You may even find labels that say “organic cotton,” but that only means it was farmed organically. Once it reaches the manufacturing stage, cotton grown organically is treated with chemicals like formaldehyde and AZO dyes. Both can negatively impact your child’s health.

I don’t recommend purchasing bedding for your child labeled “organic cotton” unless you see a GOTS or Oeko-Tex Certification.

Fabric Finishes

You may find kid’s bedding labeled “flame-retardant,” “wrinkle-resistant,” “anti-static,” or “stain-resistant.” Although these things sound convenient, especially with little ones, fabric finishes are filled with chemicals like Teflon-type chemicals and formaldehyde.

These types of chemicals used in fabric finishes have links to cancer and kidney disease.

Bamboo

Bamboo is quick to grow and requires few resources to thrive. Because of this, Bamboo has been positioned as an eco-friendly fiber to use in manufacturing bedding.

Unfortunately, it takes a chemical-heavy manufacturing process to transform it into usable fibers to make cloth. For example, Bamboo is also used to build prefab homes and bridges.

To get bamboo into a useable fiber form, bleach, sodium hydroxide, sulfuric acid, and carbon disulfide are all used in the bamboo refining process. These chemicals don’t just come out in the wash.

What to Look For in Organic Kid’s Bedding?

The healthiest bedding for your child is certified organic bedding. Look for these certifications when shopping for kid’s sheets and other healthy kid’s bedding for your home.

Certified organic linen is fine, as well. But watch out for cotton labeled 100% organic without a certification because it can still be made with harmful toxins.

GOTS

GOTS Certification: The GOTS certification ensures everything from the cotton crop to the manufacturing process is toxin-free. Watch out for labels that say “GOTS certified cotton” because that only refers to how the cotton is grown, not how it’s finished. Look for the GOTS logo on the tag or package.

Oeko-Tex

Oeko-Tex ensures your organic newborn clothes are free from hundreds of toxins. Look for the Oeko-Tex certification on the tag or packaging.

Oeko-Tex allows for synthetic fibers, low levels of formaldehyde, and some flame retardants. It’s important to read the labels of what you are buying to ensure you are buying 100% organic cotton baby clothes with this certification.

Oeko-Tex Certification: Oeko-Tex ensures your organic cotton crib sheets are free from pesticides, chemicals, and toxins in organic and non-organic fibers. Look for the Oeko-Tex certification on the tag or package.
