So the folks at Healthy Stuff reached out to me to let me know that they are planning on testing current car seats this summer. The last time they tested car seats was 2011 and they felt like it was time to do it again (and we were happy to hear that they would be testing again!). The information they find out from these tests will be helpful for all of us when we need to buy our next car seat. However, they are a non-profit and need to raise funds to do the testing. From the monthly stats of people who read my blog, and my car seat post specifically, we should be able to help them complete their fundraising goal. I realize that some can give more than others but I would ask that everyone contribute what they can – it’s for the health of our children.
The more these toxic chemicals are exposed, the more likelihood we will see change from these companies. There are alternatives to the nasty chemicals they are using. Enough pressure and we will force change to happen. Companies literally could meet the flammability requirements in the car seat covers by using wool and cotton – preferably organic! I would love to see the car seat industry use no flame retardants. Is that a big dream, yes, but a doable one. At the least, they should be using chemicals that aren’t as toxic as the ones they are using. We, as parents, need to demand that there are changes. The first step is exposing what they are using.
What’s new this time? Healthy Stuff has told me in addition to the testing that they have always done (heavy metals including lead and brominated flame retardants) they are also going to do third party testing which will include the 7 most common flame retardants. This is a HUGE development and will expose what is really going on in the car seat industry in the United States.

This is awesome! I’m wondering whether you know when will results be available to the public and whether they will test the Nuna Pipa foams. Thanks!

I don’t know when the tests results will be out. I will email to find out. I know that they are testing Orbit & Diono. I’m not sure about Nuna; however, Nuna has been so forthcoming that I’m sure they would test for what they say that they are using. I’ll ask them about Nuna though too.

Dear naturalbabymama,
Thanks so much for doing that extra research discounting the use of PUL in Willow Sprouts prefolds. There were so many useful comments below your cloth-diapers blog-post, which I was counting on re-reading and collating when our baby was close to being due. It’s now that exciting time, but for some reason all the reader comments below that post of yours now seem to have disappeared. Have you deleted them, or would you perhaps still have a copy of them ? It would be so useful to be able to read them again !
Sorry to post this here, but I don’t know how else to ask you about these missing comments !
Thanks and best wishes,
Gab

Sorry for the delay, I was on vacation. I didn’t delete the comments so I’m not sure what happened. The only PUL is in her all in one diapers. The prefolds don’t contain any PUL.
naturalbabymama says
So I see that the comments are still there. If you can’t see them let me know. Just to clarify this is what contains PUL:
I emailed with them and they only use PUL in their diaper covers. The prefolds and other diapers do not have PUL. I could tell that my diapers didn鈥檛 but didn鈥檛 know if this was something new. So I personally wouldn鈥檛 use the diaper covers but the diapers are great!

Due in April 2015 and hoping the results are out before then! The 2011 list was so helpful with our last child. Thanks for this update!!

Do you have any updates on this? We will be purchasing a bigger car seat for our baby and I want to make the best choice I can.

Do you know anything about Clek car seats made in Canada? They claim to be free of brominated and chlorinated flame retardants.

Could you please post an update? It seems the comments on your car seat blog have been deleted…I’d seen some helpful ones there but now they are gone and I don’t recall the details… and it’s time to get a conversion seat for my 8 month old! What do you recommend?
naturalbabymama says
I have no idea why they are deleted!! Ugh, so much info in there. I’ll try and look into why but after the recent Healthy Stuff report came out I just bought a Brittax convertible for my 8 month old 馃檪
